A general rule about advertising online is as follows: If you do not pay for an advertising service, the odds are that you will get mostly un-targeted traffic to your website (if you get any in the first place). Intuitively, if you pay for advertising, you MIGHT get some quality traffic. Although these are general rules, they do hold in the long run.

Below I have highlighted 7 tips that can dramatically cut down on your expenses and increase your profits.

1. Avoid Broad Matching: Broad matching are often the bane of PPC Advertisers. For example, you are advertising for Dog Obedience Training, your keywords will appear for all search terms that have 'Dog', 'Obedience' and 'Training' and all the other combinations that involve any of these three search terms. So it is an easy way for you to end up losing dollars very quickly.

*So unless you have researched the market/product very well and are experienced enough in PPC, avoid broad matching.*

2. Use Negative Keywords: Another way of dramatically cutting your costs would be to use negative keywords. For example, you are advertising for 'Dog Obedience Training Tips' you want to filter off searchers who type, 'Free Dog Obedience Training Tips.' Negative keywords are very crucial especially when you are using broad matching. Other global negative keywords are 'Crack', 'Torrents' etc.

*Depending on your niche/market/product, try to come up with relevant negative keywords and plug them without fail in your campaigns.*

3. Turn off Content and Search Network: If you are a beginner in PPC or if you are getting a lot of clicks but no sales, it is advisable to turn off the content and the search network. Now realise that in some markets, content network is more profitable than the Google search traffic. However for better tracking and testing purposes, it is advisable to switch off the content and search network in PPC Campaigns.

*Never mix the content and the Google traffic in one campaign.*

4. Geotarget: Depending on where your business is or products are relevant set your Geotarget accordingly. If you are into affiliate marketing and selling digital products, restrict your ads to just the English Speaking countries- United States, U.K., Canada and Australia.

*Don't include places/countries that are not relevant to your target market/product.*

5. Spy on your Competition: Keep a close watch on the competition. Visit their landing pages, look at their ads, the keywords and how long they are running their ads. One of the easiest ways to do it would be to snag the ads everyday for a month to know which ads appear consistently. The longer an ad runs for a particular market/product, the better are the odds of that ad raking in revenue.

Try to improve upon the winning ad. Tweak the copy, work on a better landing page, improve the sales copy etc.

Also look at the ads that show up in other markets and copy the best ads pertaining to your market. For example, if you are advertising on 'Dog Obedience Training' take a look at the ads for 'Cat Obedience Training' 'Puppy Obedience Training' etc for more ideas.

6. Split Test your Ads: If you are not Split testing your ads, you are letting your money down the drain. For any given keyword, you should definitely have at least 2 ads running simultaneously. Why? Because you want to identify the winner and always try to better your winning ad.

7. Testing and Tracking: You have to test and track all your campaigns, all your ad groups and all the keywords withing your ad groups. Often 20% of the keywords yield 80% of the profits, so it is critical to track which keywords are generating sales and which keywords are sucking your budget. Often you will be surprised by the keywords that end up making profits for you. Once you discover these diamonds, carefully preserve them and throw away the rest. Don't fool yourself into believing that having more keywords will generate you more profits. It is often the quality than the quantity of the keywords that separate the men from the boys in PPC.
